LIS 3970, RESEARCH METHODS IN LIBRARY & INFORMATION SCIENCE

Date and Time: Tuesday, 9:00-11:50am
Room: 405 Information Sciences Building
Instructor: Alison Langmead
Class Number: 32174

This course will introduce graduate students to a spectrum of research methodologies—qualitative, quantitative and mixed—that can be best adapted for use in the professional and academic sectors of the Information Sciences and related disciplines (such as Digital Studies and Methods). We will be using Alison Pickard’s work Research Methods in Information (2nd edition, 2013) as our touchstone reference work and will be focusing our writing practice on the creation of grant proposals. By the end of the course, students will have the capacity to know how to best select, implement, and combine the most appropriate research methods for their desired study or project—and also be able to express how their chosen methods work in practice. This course will be a combined section with LIS 2970 and will cover research approaches appropriate to both professional and academic settings.
